Trip Essentials

Visa & Entry
Visa Waiver Program nationals need an ESTA ($21, apply online at least 72 hours before travel). Citizens outside the Visa Waiver Program need a B1/B2 visa — expect processing to span weeks. File the application well in advance; demand spikes around the tournament.
For stays under 180 days no visa is needed for most passports. You'll get a tourist permit (FMM) on arrival, or you can complete it online before flying. Plan separate entry permits if you're attending matches in both Mexico and the US.
Visa-exempt nationals need an eTA ($7 CAD, applied online). For passports that need a full visa, plan to apply early. Standard processing is fast; major events can lengthen the wait. Your eTA is tied to your passport and remains valid for 5 years.
Currency & Costs
USD is the currency. Credit and debit cards are taken pretty much everywhere. Tips are expected: plan on 18-20% in restaurants and $1-2 per drink at bars. A casual-restaurant meal costs $15-25; fast food costs $8-15. Stadium concessions cost noticeably more.
Currency: Mexican Peso (MXN). USD is widely taken in tourist areas, but paying in pesos delivers better rates. 10-15% is the customary tip. At $5-10 per meal in local restaurants, Mexico is the most budget-friendly host nation. ATMs are widely available.
Canadian Dollar (CAD) is used. Cards, including contactless, are accepted across the board. Tip 15-20% in restaurants. Costs sit near US levels: budget $15-25 per meal. Be aware that Canadian shelf prices are pre-tax, so total cost arrives 13-15% above the listed menu price.
Weather (June-July)
Conditions differ significantly across host cities. In the south — Miami 32°C, Houston 35°C, Dallas 36°C — it's hot and humid. On the West Coast (LA 25°C, San Francisco 18°C, Seattle 22°C) conditions are milder and drier. On the East Coast (New York 29°C, Philadelphia 30°C, Boston 27°C) it's warm and humid. Pack sunscreen and a hat — and stay hydrated at outdoor venues.
Rainy weather sets in from June. At 2,200m elevation, Mexico City stays moderate by day (25°C) but cools off significantly after sunset. Plan for layers and a rain jacket. Temperatures in Guadalajara and Monterrey climb to 30-33°C with more humidity. Expect frequent — but short — afternoon thunderstorms.
Peak weather of the calendar year. Toronto runs about 26°C, with some humidity here and there. Vancouver runs about 22°C with extended daylight (up to 16 hours) and minimal rain. Conditions are pleasant for outdoor events in both cities. Light layers are recommended for evening kickoffs.
Practical Info
Plugs are Type A/B at 120V. English is the primary language. Uber and Lyft cover the full host-city list. Free WiFi is broadly available at hotels, cafes, and airports. For mobile data, buy an eSIM or prepaid SIM at the airport. Transit quality is uneven: top-tier in New York, sparse in Dallas and Houston.
Type A/B outlets, 127V (same as US). Spanish is spoken everywhere though English is widely understood in tourist areas and near stadiums. Uber and DiDi are dependable in each of the three host cities. Grab a Telcel or AT&T Mexico SIM at the airport — affordable data and calls.
Power: Type A/B at 120V (US-compatible). Toronto is English; Vancouver bilingual English/French. Uber works in Toronto and Vancouver. Reliable transit: Toronto's TTC and Vancouver's SkyTrain both connect to their respective stadiums. Canadian carriers are expensive; consider an eSIM or prepaid plan as a visitor.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I book my flight for the 2026 World Cup?

Book 3 to 5 months before each match — January through April 2026 is the sweet spot. Prices rise sharply from late April as demand peaks. For group-stage dates (June 11 to June 27), watch fares in February. For knockout-round matches (late June through July 19), February through March is safest.

Which US airport is cheapest for reaching multiple host cities?

New York, Miami, and Dallas are the most flexible hubs for World Cup travel. JFK and EWR serve MetLife Stadium directly and have the cheapest connections to Canada and transatlantic travel. Miami pairs well with Mexican host cities. DFW is a strong base for Texas matches (Dallas, Houston) and Mexico departures.

Do I need a passport for matches in Mexico or Canada?

Yes. US citizens need a valid passport book for air travel to Mexico or Canada — a passport card does not work for flights. Mexico does not require a tourist visa for US citizens staying under 180 days. Canada requires an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization), applied for online. File your eTA at least 2 weeks before departure.

Can I fly between US host cities without blowing the budget?

Yes. Domestic hops are usually the cheapest part of the trip. Southwest, Spirit, and JetBlue serve most host airports with fares under $150 one-way if booked 6+ weeks out. For Northeast Corridor matches (NYC, Philly, Boston), Amtrak or driving often beats flying once you include airport time.

What happens if fares drop after I book?

A few US carriers (Alaska, JetBlue, Southwest) offer fare-drop credits if prices fall after you purchase. Southwest is the most generous: rebook the same flight at the lower fare and keep the difference as a travel credit. Set a price alert on this page so you know the moment a cheaper fare shows up.

Do I need travel insurance for the World Cup?

For US-only matches your regular health plan will usually cover emergency care. For Mexico or Canada matches a short-term medical plan ($30 to $60 per trip) is worth it — it covers out-of-network hospital costs that can otherwise run into the thousands. For any international leg, add trip-interruption coverage in case a match shifts or a flight cancels.
